If there’s one place in the world where nature lovers can find paradise, it’s Tasmania. The state offers a stunning mix of rugged coastlines and ancient rainforests. To see the wild truly come to life, head over to the West Coast, a remote and relatively untouched region with the most breathtaking landscapes in Australia. Can you hear it calling your name?

Iconic Landmarks To Visit

With all the incredible natural wonders Tasmania has, it can be tough to know where to start. Here are some of the most iconic landmarks that should be at the top of your West Coast bucket list.

Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain is a famous natural attraction. As part of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, this area is one of the best camping spots in Tasmania! Whether you’re a pro hiker or just looking for a peaceful escape, Cradle Mountain delivers. Expect dramatic peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and an abundance of wildlife.

The Tarkine Wilderness

The Tarkine defines true wilderness. Home to one of the world’s largest cool temperate rainforests, this vast expanse of untouched nature is a dream. Walk beneath towering myrtle trees, spot rare creatures like the Tasmanian devil, and soak in the sheer beauty of this ancient landscape. You’re in for a truly unforgettable experience!

Gordon River

Flowing through the heart of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, the Gordon River has some of the most serene and picturesque scenery in the world. A river cruise is the best way to witness this breathtaking waterway, where you will glide past lush rainforest, mirror-like reflections on the water, and the famous Heritage Landing boardwalk.

Henty Sand Dunes

Visit the Henty Sand Dunes outside Strahan and feel like you’re stepping onto another planet. These massive dunes stretch for kilometers and are perfect for sandboarding, quad biking, or simply taking in the surreal landscape. The contrast of golden sand against a deep green forest is a sight to behold!

Everything You Can Do Here

Tasmania’s West Coast is begging to be explored. Should you choose this region as your next destination, make sure you have all the energy because there is so much to do.

There are World Heritage-listed national parks to hike; feel free to bring your camera because you will want to capture every corner you turn to. Camping in Tasmania is also a must-try, especially if you love being in the center of nature and waking up to the sounds of the wild.

Kayaking is another popular activity on the West Coast, with plenty of calm rivers and lakes to paddle through. Keep an eye out for the unique flora and fauna, which include wombats, platypuses, possums, and hundreds of bird species, as well as blackwood and celery top pine.

Recommended Itineraries

If only you could stay here forever. But alas, time is limited. To make the most of your trip to Tasmania’s West Coast, here are some recommended itineraries.

Day Trips

Travel from Hobart to the Mount Field National Park and see Tasmania’s most photographed waterfall, Russell Falls. You can also opt to go from Lake St Clair to Strahan via Queenstown for the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. For an impactful experience, go on the award-winning Gordon River Cruise.

3-Day Travels

In summer, you can leave the North West of Tasmania and reach Tullah, where you will find Lake Rosebery. From there, you can continue toward Queenstown and see the Wee Georgie Wood Railway and the Galley Museum. Check out the Spion Kop Lookout while you are there, too. You can also go on a personalised tour with local guides to the summit of Mount Owen.

The next day, go to Strahan for breakfast. Book tours and activities, and don’t forget to see The Ship That Never Was, Australia’s longest-running play. On your last day, drive to Zeehan before heading back to Tullah. You can walk the Ocean Beach Trail or stop by the West Coast Heritage Centre.
